General
Foundation studies are normally offered by universities. The programme is aimed for international students and mature students who do not meet the university entrance requirement. The programme enables students to gain sufficient English language proficiency and academic skills. Upon completing the foundation studies, students will be awarded a certificate as a university entry qualification for undergraduate study, recognized by all New Zealand universities.
Generally, the programme is a one year course from February to November. Some universities however do offer mid-year (July) and summer (December) intakes. The program emphasizes in two major aspects, academic English preparation and specialized academic knowledge such as accounting, chemistry, mathematics etc. Some subjects are compulsory but students will still have to choose some optional subjects. Needless to say, the chosen subjects should be relevant to the degree that they wish to pursue.
Typical tuition fee is in the range of NZD$11,000 to NZD$14,000
Entry Requirement
Age The applicant should be 18 years old or above at the time of applying.
English Proficiency Applicants are normally required to provide proof of English proficiency level. This is normally done by attempting a recognized English language test such as IELTS or TOEFL. The minimum requirements for both tests are as follow:
- IELTS (Academic) 5.5 (with 5.0 or better in each band)
- TOEFL 520
If you do not meet the above requirement, you are advised to attend English language school to gain better English proficiency to meet the requirement.
